Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus begins a new hunt for yet another WTA title on Friday, kicking off her Italian Open campaign against Anastasia Potapova of Russia in the second round on Friday.
Sabalenka captured her second WTA-1000 title of the year as she vanquished Coco Gauff of the United States 6-3 7-6(3) to rule the 2025 Mutua Madrid Open. The world’s No.1 delivered a near flawless run to the Madrid title, dropping only one set in six matches. Sabalenka improved her 2025 WTA season record to 31-5, but more importantly, the win put her in a prime position to contend for the French Open title this year.
Getting the honor to face Sabalenka in the second round is Anastasia Potapova, who reached the round-of-16 in Madrid. Potapova moved on to the second round with a gutsy 2-6 7-6(6) 6-3 win over Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine. The win gives Potapova another chance to play Sabalenka after the Russian withdrew from her match with the world’s No.1 in the second round of the 2025 Stuttgart Open three weeks ago.
