The Army Black Knights will head to North Carolina this week for a game against the East Carolina Pirates at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium in Greenville. Kickoff is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, at 7:30 p.m. EST (broadcast on ESPN).
Army opened the season with a surprising loss to Tarleton State in double overtime (30-27). The Black Knights ran for 280 yards and three touchdowns, but a late fumble led to a Texans touchdown that tied the game up at 24-24. They took down Kansas State, 24-21, the following week, but then lost another one in OT, this time to North Texas (45-38). The offense has had some growing pains, as expected, with several new starters on the line and at the skill positions. However, one of the main concerns entering the season was the lack of a pass rush; they have recorded just three sacks through three games. As for East Carolina, the Pirates are coming off a solid 8-5 season from last year. They had a tough one to start the season vs. NC State, followed by a pair of easy matchups before taking on BYU. The Pirates were no match for the Wolfpack (17-24) or Cougars, but took down Campbell (56-3) and Coastal Carolina (38-0).

The Army defense was fourth in the country in scoring last season. This season’s unit through three games is allowing 32 points per game (No. 115). East Carolina will undoubtedly try to get the passing game established early on, a task that should be too hard against Army’s pass rush. The Black Knights will try, of course, to establish the run since that is what they do. That could be easier said than done against an East Carolina defense that is averaging 87 yards allowed on the ground. I don’t think the Pirates will be able to slow down the Army run game, but I doubt the Black Knights can slow down East Carolina’s pass game. For that reason, I’m betting the TOTAL rather than picking a winner.
