Arkansas travels to Tennessee looking to recapture the magic of last year’s memorable upset of the Volunteers. A year ago in Fayetteville, the Razorbacks upset the Volunteers 19-14, a win that proved the beginning of the end for the Sam Pittman era at Arkansas. Following that game, Pittman won just five games before Arkansas dumped him after a blowout loss at home to Notre Dame.
Bobby Petrino now takes over, and it’s hard to imagine a worse situation for him to be in. On one hand, a new voice can completely change a team’s direction for a game or two. On the other, the Volunteers are at home this year and thoroughly remember how this game ruined their season last year. Tennessee came into the Arkansas game undefeated, but losing this game meant they missed out on the SEC championship game, settled for the No. 9 seed in the College Football Playoff and got trucked by Ohio State in round one. This year, the Volunteers should be far more focused.

The biggest question here is whether Arkansas is going to pull its weight on hitting the total. Tennessee is almost certain to do a lot of heavy lifting. The Volunteers are averaging 51 points per game, and given that they broke 40 on Georgia, Arkansas isn’t likely to put up much resistance. Bobby Petrino’s an offensive coach, not a defensive one, and the Razorbacks almost certainly haven’t fixed what went wrong against Notre Dame.
It’s going to be tougher to determine whether Arkansas will score and make this a game, or if the Hogs will just get creamed from the opening whistle. While the bye week might have helped, Tennessee is likely to be a team on a mission. The Volunteers are very capable of embarrassing teams when they want to, and after last year, they likely want to do exactly that. Our prediction for Arkansas vs. Tennessee is Tennessee -10.5.
