The Oakland Athletics and Arizona Diamondbacks face off Sunday afternoon in Game 2 of their interleague series, following a dominant Game 1 win by Arizona. The Diamondbacks cruised to a 7-2 victory on Saturday, taking control of the game after a brief scare in the third inning when the A’s plated both of their runs. From there, it was all Arizona, breaking open the game and quieting a surprisingly resilient Oakland squad.
Despite the lopsided loss, the Athletics have shown flashes of life lately. Although they remain near the bottom of the American League with the second-fewest wins, Oakland entered this series on a surprising upswing, winning seven of their previous nine games. That includes winning three of their last four, as the team continues to defy expectations during a season widely considered a rebuilding campaign. Their recent form is the best stretch they’ve had all year, and the A’s will be hoping to get back on track with a bounce-back performance in Game 2.
The Diamondbacks, by contrast, have been mired in a deep slump. Saturday’s win snapped a six-game losing streak and marked just their second victory in the past 11 contests. Once a playoff hopeful, Arizona has recently fallen out of the National League Wild Card picture due to inconsistent pitching and streaky offense. Saturday’s win was a much-needed morale boost, and now they’ll look to build momentum as the series continues.

Our Arizona Diamondbacks vs Athletics Prediction
On the mound for Oakland is right-hander Jack Perkins, who has appeared in multiple games this season but is still searching for consistency. In limited action—19.2 innings—he’s posted a solid 2.75 ERA but has yet to record a win. While the ERA looks promising, Perkins has not faced many high-powered lineups, and his peripheral stats suggest he’s been walking a fine line with control issues and limited strikeout potential. This outing will be a good test of whether he can handle a more experienced National League offense.
Arizona counters with Eduardo Rodriguez, a veteran left-hander who has struggled in recent outings. Rodriguez has allowed four or more earned runs in three of his last four starts, including five runs surrendered in his most recent appearance. His command and efficiency have been erratic, and opposing teams have taken advantage of missed spots and elevated pitches. Still, Rodriguez brings more big-league experience to the table than Perkins, and he'll look to reset against a relatively unproven A’s lineup.
The key to this game will likely be which struggling starter settles in more effectively. Rodriguez has been shaky, but the Diamondbacks’ lineup has the tools to back him up, especially after their strong offensive showing in Game 1. With hitters like Ketel Marte, Christian Walker, and Corbin Carroll providing consistent power and speed, Arizona has a clear edge at the plate. They’ve shown they can break out offensively, and against a young pitcher like Perkins, this could be another opportunity to build confidence.
Oakland’s recent surge makes them a dangerous underdog, especially at home, but their offense remains inconsistent and ranks near the bottom of the league in most categories, including home runs and batting average. If Rodriguez can limit damage early and the D-Backs’ bats stay warm, Arizona has the upper hand.
Given the matchup of a veteran trying to bounce back versus a rookie still finding his footing, and considering Arizona’s lineup advantage, the Diamondbacks are the safer pick to take Game 2 and possibly clinch the series. A victory here could mark the beginning of a much-needed rebound for a team with postseason aspirations still within reach. Our prediction for Athletics vs. Arizona Diamondbacks: Diamondbacks to win.
