Cubs and Diamondbacks played out one of the craziest games in MLB in the first game of the series on Friday. What was expected to be a low-scoring duel ended with a final score of 13-11 in favor of the Cubs.
The Cubs led the game 2-1 until the fifth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Ian Happ hit a grand slam that seemed like a checkmate for the D-backs. However, with grand slams by Suárez, RBIs by Perdomo, an RBI double by Grichuk, and a three-run homer by Gurriel Jr., the D-backs had their most productive inning of the season, scoring 10 runs, stunning Cubs fans and turning the score around 7-11.
However, the back-and-forth continued, and the Cubs responded with Kelly's second three-run home run, his second of the game, and solo home runs by Tucker and Susuki put them ahead 13-11.
Finally, the ninth inning arrived, with closer Pressly finally able to put the game on hold, pitching a scoreless inning in the final inning, securing the victory and earning his second W of the season.
