Jessica Pegula of the United States will try to establish another hot streak as she plays Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the third round of the 2025 Canadian Open on Friday.
Pegula, the defending Canadian Open champion, kicked off her title defense on a high note as she downed Maria Sakkari of Greece 7-5 6-4 on Wednesday. The No.4 seed Pegula played with sharper focus and urgency, making she would not commit the fatal errors she had in her past two games. Pegula improved her hard court this year record to 21-7 and 2025 WTA season record to 36-14.
Sevastova reached the round-of-32 after scoring another three-set victory over Magda Linette of Poland 6-3 4-6 6-4. The Latvian banked on her experience to beat Linette for the swing points of the match, collecting 45 points off the first serves and 5 breakpoints to outlast Linette. Sevastova, who has now won two consecutive three-set matches, is pitted against another tough opponent, pitted against the No.3 seed and world’s No.4 Pegula.
