Club América played convincingly in their Leagues Cup debut this year, securing a resounding 3-1 victory against San Diego FC. They will now travel for their first away match of the year to face the Portland Timbers. This will be the fourth meeting between these two clubs, following América's elimination of San Diego in the 2021 Concacaf Champions League. Last year, they faced off in the same competition in a match that ended 1-1, with América winning on penalties.
Against San Diego, forward Brian Rodríguez opened the scoring with a tremendous individual effort that included a cutback, followed by a low shot that hit the post and went in. The Uruguayan then assisted Sánchez for the second goal and Violante for the third just before halftime, a brilliant performance from him.
But the Timbers also had a strong start to their league campaign, beating Puebla 5-2 at Jed-Wen Field. Bassett scored two goals, and Da Costa provided two assists.
