The second of Tuesday’s four African Cup of Nations group games comes to us from the Moroccan capital of Rabat, where the Algerians will begin their campaign against Sudan. Following that memorable night in Cairo back in 2019, when they secured their firstAFCON win since 1990, beating Senegal by a goal to nil, the Algerians will be hoping to kick things off with a bang, and let’s be real, an opening task of facing Sudan offers Vladimir Petković’s men the perfect opportunity to get up and running with a win.
This is a game between two previous AFCON winners, so we shouldn’t pay the Sudanese, who ruled the continent back in 1970, too much disrespect. However, in recent years, things haven’t really gone the way of the Desert Hawks, who have only qualified for two of the last eight AFCONS. They haven’t been to the knockout stage of this competition since 2012. Maybe 2025 will be the start of a new era for the men coached by James Kwesi Appiah.

The Fennec Foxes didn’t exactly shift through the gears when preparing for the test in Morocco, with Petković’s men most recently losing in the quarter finals of the FIFA Arab Cup, tying 1-1 with the UAE, before losing on penalties. Prior to that, the Algerians defeated Iraq, a result that followed an easy win over Bahrain. For the Sudanese, losing is a more regular habit. Appiah’s men lost their most recent game, coming unstuck against Bahrain, losing by three goals to one back in early December. Before that, they lost to Iraq, while they’ve now won just one of their last 14 games in regulation time. Such a run does not exactly point towards the Desert Hawks making significant headway in Morocco, let’s be honest.

Ahead of this tournament, Vladimir Petković has no major injury concerns to contend with, meaning that we should see the Algerians take to the field at full strength. Veteran Riyad Mahrez is expected to feature in what will otherwise be a young front four, with Mohamed Amoura up top. It’s then a choice of two out of three between Fares Chaibi, Anis Hadj Moussa and Ibrahim Maza, who at just 20 has been tearing it up for Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga.

While many of the Algerians play their club soccer at big clubs in Germany, England and France, there's a distinct lack of top-level experience in the Sudanese squad. James Kwesi Appiah will not be able to call upon players plying their trade at any notable level in Europe, with most players operating domestically in Africa. Exceptions are Mohamed Eisa and Abobaker Eisa, both of whom currently play their club soccer in Thailand.

Given that the youngster has created with regularity at that level, it's reasonable to suggest that he's a little generously priced to create chances against a weak Sudanese team. Let's be real, this is a player who has picked the lock against some top defenders this season, so do not be surprised for one minute if he creates lots here.
