Alexei Popyrin is playing like the defending champion that he is. Can he piece together another deep run and win it all for the second straight year?
It looks he really can. On Saturday, Popyrin will face Holger Rune for a spot in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Canadian Open.
Popyrin returned to the fourth round of the Canadian Open after downing former world’s No.1 Daniil Medvedev 5-7 6-4 6-4 in the third round. Popyrin pulled off the comeback by amping up the intensity in the second and third sets, allowing him to overwhelm Medvedev with his aggressive tactics. Popyrin’s gamble paid off as he bombarded Medvedev with 53 first-serve points and captured three breakpoints behind 41 return points.
Meanwhile, Rune posted another straight-set win, downing Alexandre Muller 6-2 6-4. Denmark’s No.1 played to his status, winning 100 percent of his serves against Muller while breaking the Frenchman three times. Rune improved to 11-5 on the hard court this year and 24-14 overall in 2025.

Our Alexei Popyrin vs Holger Rune Prediction
Fearless Forecast – Alexei Popyrin shows heart, dukes it out with Holger Rune to the finish.
You can sense that Alexei Popyrin really wants to win again in this tournament. He had all the reasons to quit when he blew the first set against Medvedev, but he refused to go down without a fight. He got rewarded with the win.
But he’s facing a far difficult opponent in the next round, a player he failed to beat more than two years ago.
Rune takes his surging form into his battle with Popyrin, looking to dethrone the Australian with another scintillating win. He is 11-5 and armed with the experience in high-leverage matches.
Popyrin will need to take a big step up to match the caliber of Holger Rune, which I believe he can. It all boils down to how badly he wants to win this tournament.
Picking Popyrin to win straight-up is risky given that he’s matched against a top-10 player. He hasn’t gotten much opportunity to play this type of guys this year, going 1-1 in two matches against top-10 players
However, I believe he will compete to the finish against Rune. He will hold his ground against Rune, who is 11-5 in hard-court matches this year.
