A +275 underdog in her first US Open main draw match, Alexandra Eala of the Philippines will go for history against Clara Tauson of Denmark in the first round on Sunday.
Eala seeks to become the first player from the Philippines to win a match in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. Eala, who cracked into the WTA top-100 after her scintillating semifinal run at the 2025 Miami Open, already made history by becoming the first Filipino to play in the main draw of the French, Wimbledon, and now the US Open. Unfortunately, Eala came up short in her first two attempts to capture her first career Grand Slam win, losing to Emiliana Arango at the French Open and Barbora Krejcikova at Wimbledon in three sets.
Tauson compiled a 6-3 record across three tournaments during her US Open preparations. Denmark’s No.1 women’s singles player reached the quarterfinal of the 2025 Washington Open, semifinal of the Canadian Open and third round of the 2025 Cincinnati Open. During her campaign in Montreal, Tauson scored back-to-back wins over Grand Slam champions Madison Keys 6-1 6-4 and Iga Swiatek 7-6(1) 6-3.

Bet on Alexandra Eala to cover +4.5 Games against probably the toughest player she will ever face in a Grand Slam main draw match. Eala impressed in her losses to Emiliana Arango and Barbora Krejcikova, but neither player was playing at the level of world’s No.15 Clara Tauson. Krejcikova is a two-time major champion, but it has been a rough year for the Czech because of injuries. As for Tauson, she has had a deep run in Montreal and compiled a 20-8 record on the hard court this year.
Tauson is a no-brainer pick to win this match, yet expect the fiery Eala to swing for the fences against the heavy favorites. Again, this young lady has all the tools to become a force on the WTA Tour in the coming years, especially on the hard court, where her aggressive baseline game becomes a lot more potent. All Eala is seasoning and a lot of growing pains to reach her potential. Her quest for a first Grand Slam main draw win may wait for another time, but I have little doubt that Eala will once again impress in Flushing Meadows.
