With 2024 Shanghai champion Jannik Sinner absent, Alexander Zverev is the top seed at this penultimate Masters 1000 event of the season. Having enjoyed the best season of his career at age 29 (winning the French Open in June and the US Open in September), the German is looking to cement his dominance on this Asian tour. A quarterfinalist in Beijing last week, where he was eliminated by N. Djokovic in a three-set match, the top-3 player should easily get off to a strong start in this match.
Yibing Wu, for his part, is a wild card in this tournament. After winning his first-round match 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) against lucky loser and world No. 94 M. Zheng, the 26-year-old is already performing better than he did at the recent Cincinnati Masters 1000, where he was eliminated in the qualifying rounds by Portugal’s J. Faria.
