by Lou Aguila in ATP Toronto Picks
The No.1 seed, Alexander Zverev, will battle the defending champion, Alexei Popyrin, on Monday for the right to advance to the final four at the 2025 Canadian Open.
Zverev rolled into the quarterfinal after clinching his first win over Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina 6-4 1-0 ret. Zverev, who earned the top seed of this ATP 1000 event following the withdrawal of world’s No.1 Jannik Sinner and world’s No.2 Carlos Alcaraz, has played like the man to beat in this tourney, conceding only three service games across three matches. The German also picked up wins over Adam Walton 7-6(6) 6-4 and Matteo Arnaldi 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2.
Popyrin lives to fight another day after hacking out a straight-set victory over Holger Rune of Denmark 4-6 6-2 6-3. Powered by 39 first-serve points, Popyrin yielded one service break while breaking thrice to complete a come-from-behind win over the No.5 seed. Saturday’s result rewarded Popyrin with his second straight win over a top-10 seed in Toronto.
