Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland will take on Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan in the first round of the 2025 Swiss Gstaad Open on Tuesday.
Wawrinka did not compete in this year’s Wimbledon Open and instead played at the IASI Challenger, reaching the semifinal round of that ATP Challenger event. Wawrinka, who turned 40 years old last March, will try to defend father time anew as he begins another campaign at the ATP 250 event in Gstaad, where he was runner-up once in 2005.
Meanwhile, Shevchenko will attempt to end a three-match losing streak in Monday’s first-round tussle with Wawrinka. Shevchenko lost to Reilly Opelka 3-6 5-7 6(4)-7 in the first round of the 2025 Wimbledon Open. Before that, the Kazakh had reached the semifinal round of a clay court challenger tournament in Bratislava. Shevchenko is 20-24 in 2025, including 16-14 on clay.

Our Alexander Shevchenko vs Stan Wawrinka Prediction
Why should you pick Stanislas Wawrinka to win? – Hot off a semifinal stint at Iasi, Wawrinka has some momentum heading into his opening-round match with Shevchenko. Although he lost his first and only encounter with the Kazakh in the first round of the 2023 Swiss Indoors Basel 6-3 7-6(8), Wawrinka remains a dangerous opponent on clay with a respectable 10-10 record on the surface this year. Shevchenko, meanwhile, is 16-14 on clay and 20-24 overall in 2025. This isn’t going to be a walk in the park for the 40-year-old former Grand Slam champion, but his lengthy experience, winning pedigree, and home court support from the crowd at Gstaad should power him past the former top-50 player.
Our betting prediction for Alexander Shevchenko vs. Stanislas Wawrinka: Stan Wawrinka will win.
