Alex Michelsen of the United States kicks off his French Open campaign against Juan Manuel Cerundolo of Argentina in the first round on Sunday.
Michelsen has gone through a roller coaster campaign this clay-courts season, which saw him reach the quarterfinal at the US Men’s Clay Court championship, winning a title at the Estoril Challenger and absorbing a string of first-round exits at Madrid, Rome, and Geneva.
Juan Manuel Cerundolo hasn’t been as successful as his older brother, Francisco, in prestigious clay-court tournaments but he has nevertheless put together a 26-13 slate on the red dirt this year. Cerundolo rattled off three consecutive wins (Gauthier Onclin, Hady Habbib, and Daniel Elahi Galan) in the qualification phase of the French Open to punch his ticket into the main draw.
