Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan will tangle with the upset-minded Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia in the quarterfinal round of the 2025 Ningbo Open on Friday.

Ranked No.9 in the world, Rybakina is the overwhelming favorite at -700. However, Tomljanovic has won her last four matches, including an upset win over world No.12 Clara Tauson.

Rybakina hurdled her first test in Ningbo, coming through with a three-set victory over Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 in the second round. The No.3 seed Rybakina won 13 of 16 service games and seized five breakpoints to fend off a serious upset bid from Yastremska. With the victory, the Kazakh earned her 12th quarterfinal appearance this year.

Tomljanovic is on a four-match winning streak, reaching the quarterfinal stage as a qualifier. Tomljanovic posted wins over Maya Joint and Antonio Ruzic in the qualification stage before taking down Clara Tauson 1-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the first round and Zeynep Sonmez 7-6, 6-3 in the second round. Ranked 104th in the world, Tomljanovic is now 12-12 on the hard court in 2025.
