The Gold Cup, CONCACAF’s premier international tournament, kicks off on July 14, bringing together the top national teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean to battle for the region’s crown. As always, there are a few clear favorites heading into the tournament. Mexico, the defending champion and most successful team in the competition’s history with 12 titles, is one. The U.S. is another, especially with home-field advantage and the hunger to reclaim the trophy. So, which matchups should fans circle on their calendars during the group stage?

USA vs. Trinidad and Tobago

Group D: Sunday, June 15

The U.S. opens its campaign against Trinidad and Tobago in what’s become a surprisingly intriguing matchup, not necessarily because of the teams’ current level, but because of the uncertainty surrounding the American squad. All eyes will be on new head coach Mauricio Pochettino, who’s off to a rocky start with 4 consecutive defeats at the helm of the stars and stripes.

The U.S. was thrashed 4–0 by Turkey in their most recent friendly, adding to their pre-tournament woes. That adds even more pressure heading into this opener against a tricky Trinidad and Tobago side that often proves a tough test in regional play.

Costa Rica vs. Dominican Republic

Group A: Tuesday, June 18

Group A is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in the tournament, featuring Mexico, Costa Rica, and the Dominican Republic, three teams with very different levels but lots of potential for entertaining games. While Mexico vs. the Dominican Republic in the opener will be worth a watch, the matchup between Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic might be even more balanced and compelling.

Costa Rica comes in hot, winning 4 of its last 5, while the Dominican Republic has only lost once in its last 11 matches. If you’re from Central America or just love tightly contested matches, this is one to watch.

Mexico vs. Costa Rica

Group Stage: Sunday, June 22

You usually have to wait until the knockout rounds for marquee showdowns, but this group stage clash between Mexico and Costa Rica is as good as it gets. Mexico enters as the most decorated team in Gold Cup history and is always a favorite to win it all. Costa Rica, meanwhile, has looked solid in the lead-up to the tournament.

Adding a little extra spice to the matchup, Costa Rica is now coached by Miguel Herrera, the former manager of the Mexican national team and a familiar face in Mexican club soccer. Can he outwit his home country on the big stage?
