2025 Giro d’Italia: A Historic Start in Albania

If you're not sure what to expect from the 2025 Giro d’Italia, stay with us, we’ve got all the key details on the most exciting stages of this year’s race.

Spanning 3,413 km over 21 stages, the 2025 Giro promises an unforgettable show. It kicks off on May 9 with a first-ever start in Albania, and the race is expected to be intense from the very beginning. According to our 2025 Giro prediction, a fellow Slovenian could follow in Tadej Pogačar’s footsteps as champion, with several major moments lined up throughout the competition.

From the sea to the mountains and through Italy’s rich historical landscapes, this edition begins in Albania and finishes on June 1 in Rome, offering a scenic and challenging route.

The first three days in Albania will be demanding. Stage 3, around Vlorë, includes the first major climb of the race, the Llogara Pass (10.7 km at 7.3%). The first time trial comes early as well, with a 13.7 km course around Tirana on May 10 in Stage 2.

Key Stages in Italy: Climbers Take Center Stage

Once the race enters Italy, the serious climbing begins. Stage 7 to Tagliacozzo features the first summit finish, with slopes reaching up to 14%. In Stage 9, riders will face a stretch of nearly 30 km of the famous Strade Bianche gravel roads between Gubbio and Siena, which could shake up the standings.

Stage 10 brings the second time trial between Lucca and Pisa (28.6 km), offering a key opportunity to gain time before a brutal series of mountain stages.

The final week is where the Giro could be won or lost. Highlights include:

  • Stage 15: Monte Grappa
  • Stage 16: A punishing finish at San Valentino
  • Stage 17: The feared Mortirolo climb

But the biggest test comes in Stage 20, with the legendary Colle delle Finestre, an 18.5 km climb at a 9.2% gradient, partly on gravel and reaching an altitude of 2,200 meters. This stage could ultimately decide who takes home the pink jersey.

The 2025 Giro wraps up in Rome, with a spectacular final sprint past the Eternal City’s iconic landmarks. This year’s race also marks the final Giro for Romain Bardet, adding more emotion and intensity to the closing chapter. With so much at stake, a dramatic and suspenseful finish is all but guaranteed. The 2025 Giro d’Italia is shaping up to be a must-watch event.
