The grass-court swing is in full motion as Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the 2025 season, rapidly approaches. Grass isn’t the easiest surface to master, so top players want to make the most of the tournaments leading up to it. There are 500 ranking points up for grabs this week in London (ATP), Halle (ATP), and Berlin (WTA), and the action promises to be intense with stars like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Aryna Sabalenka all taking the court.

A Crucial Opportunity for Sinner and Alcaraz

ATP: Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

So far this season, Sinner (Australian Open) and Alcaraz (French Open) have split the Grand Slam titles, and the events in England could tip the balance between them. Sinner, currently ranked No. 1 in the world, will be playing in Halle, where he’s one of the top contenders. However, he could face a tricky second-round matchup against Aleksandr Bublik, a player known for his strength on grass. Other notable names in the field include Alexander Zverev, João Fonseca, Daniil Medvedev, and Andrey Rublev. Outside of Zverev, the rest are still looking to break into the ATP top 10.

Alcaraz, meanwhile, is set to compete in London, where he won the title in 2023. Grass wasn’t always his favorite surface, but his back-to-back Wimbledon championships in 2023 and 2024 proved he can thrive on it. This tournament will be crucial if he wants to reclaim the No. 1 ranking. His path looks manageable on paper, with main challengers like Holger Rune, Jakub Mensik, and Alex de Minaur all struggling with inconsistency this season. Rune (No. 9) and De Minaur (No. 12) need deep runs just to hold on to their top spots.

Sabalenka Looks to Cement Her Reign

WTA: Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff

Aryna Sabalenka continues to dominate the WTA Tour and sits comfortably atop the rankings, nearly 3,500 points ahead of Coco Gauff. That said, the two could be on a collision course for another final—this time in Berlin, where both are top seeds. Their most recent showdown came at the French Open, where Gauff came out on top. But they’ll have to keep an eye on other grass-court threats like Elena Rybakina, Ons Jabeur, and rising star Mirra Andreeva.

One key absence from Berlin: Iga Swiatek. The Polish star has chosen to rest ahead of Wimbledon, meaning she won’t have a chance to improve her current ranking (No. 8). While she won’t drop any spots, she also won’t move up, which could hurt her seeding at the All England Club. It’s worth noting that this scenario led her to face Sabalenka in the Roland Garros semis—where she was knocked out.
