The Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers meet this afternoon for the second game of their three-game weekend series, with both clubs headed in very different directions as the All-Star break approaches. Milwaukee took the opener in dominant fashion on Friday, cruising to an 8-3 win behind a well-rounded effort that included timely hitting and solid pitching.
It was a strong statement by the Brewers, who had previously dropped two out of three to this same Nationals squad to close out the first half of the 2024 season. Now, with playoff implications heating up, the Brewers are seeking to keep the momentum alive.
The Brewers enter Saturday’s contest at 53-40, just 1.5 games behind the division-leading Cubs and holding firm in the second National League Wild Card position. They’ve been one of the hottest teams in the league recently, punctuated by a convincing sweep of the reigning champion LA Dodgers.
The offense has found a rhythm, and the pitching staff has stepped up to match. With a chance to inch closer to the top of the NL Central, Milwaukee has plenty of incentive to keep rolling against a Nationals team still searching for consistency.
On the other side, Washington has had a frustrating and uneven season. With a 38-54 record, the Nationals are in last place in the NL East and trailing the first-place Phillies by 16 games. Though there have been flashes of potential, such as taking two of three from Detroit earlier this month, the team has struggled to string wins together.
Two prolonged losing streaks, one seven games and another 10, defined their early summer woes. Now, with little left to lose, the Nationals are trying to play spoiler and evaluate their young talent.

Our Washington Nationals vs Milwaukee Brewers Prediction
Veteran right-hander Brandon Woodruff gets the nod for Washington today in just his second start since returning from injury. He looked fantastic in his season debut last week against Miami, tossing six innings of one-run ball with eight strikeouts and no walks. Woodruff brings both experience and elite stuff to the mound. Over his career, he’s compiled a 3.08 ERA and nearly 800 strikeouts. His dominance against the Brewers has also been notable—he’s 4-0 in seven appearances with a microscopic 0.96 ERA against Milwaukee.
The Brewers will counter with rookie lefty Shinnosuke Ogasawara, a Japanese import who made his MLB debut earlier this week. It was a tough outing for the 25-year-old, as he surrendered four runs over 2.2 innings in a loss to the Red Sox. While his minor league numbers show some promise, Ogasawara is still adjusting to the major league level. Facing an experienced starter like Woodruff could present a challenging matchup for the young left-hander.
Given Milwaukee’s hot stretch and Washington’s ongoing inconsistency, the Brewers appear well-positioned to extend their series lead. If their offense continues to click and Ogasawara struggles again, the Nationals could be in for another uphill battle this afternoon. Our prediction for Milwaukee Brewers vs. Washington Nationals: Brewers to win.
