Madison Keys of the United States eyes a place in the women’s singles final of the 2025 HSBC Championship against the tournament’s giant-killer, Tatjana Maria of Germany, in Saturday’s semifinal match.
Keys survived a grueling three-set match with Diana Shnaider of Russia 2-6 6-3 6-4 to advance into her first semifinal since the Indian Wells Open. The reigning Australian Open champion rallied from a set down by holding all her remaining serves in the second and third sets and capturing two breakpoints that proved to be the difference maker in this hotly contested match.
Maria recorded a fifth consecutive victory and perhaps her biggest win of the year on Friday when she pulled off a straight-set win over former Wimbledon Open champion Elena Rybakina 6-4 7-6(4). At 37 years old, Maria continued to defy Father Time as she punished Rybakina with crafty net play and shots from sharp angles. The German finished the match with 9 aces, 41 first-serve points, and 3 breakpoints – including 2 in the second set. The win gave Maria her second top-20 win in the tournament alone after downing Karolina Muchova in the second round.

However, I still have a ton of respect for Keys and her ability to raise the level of her play when the stakes are higher. Maria is waxing hot heading into her semifinal clash with Keys. She has won five matches (including two in the qualifiers), holding 85 percent of serves and converting 24 of 45 breakpoint chances. Keys, who is coming off an exhausting three-set tussle with Shnaider, must brace for a tough challenge from Maria, whose endurance is unquestionably still at a high level at 37 years old. Keys, who captured the Australian Open championships early this year by surviving five three-set matches, could perhaps gut out a win out of this match, but I guarantee this isn’t going to be a walk in the park.
