On Saturday night, at PayPal Park, it really is do or die for the San Jose Earthquakes. The time is now for Bruce Arena's men, who can still clinch a place in the postseason. To get into the all-important top nine, the Earthquakes need to defeat Austin FC, who've already ensured playoff soccer, though we shouldn't expect the visitors to lie down here. They need at least a tie to guarantee that they finish ahead of the Portland Timbers, which would provide them with a potentially easier postseason run.
For the hosts, it's win or bust. If the Earthquakes can get the better of their visitors, then they'll have a chance of finishing in the top nine, but it's not quite as simple as get the win and get over the line. For Arena's men to finish in the top nine, they'll need to win and hope that both Real Salt Lake and the Colorado Rapids lose.
