The Royals beat the Pirates 9-3 in Kansas City in the first of the series in a game where their stars responded: Pasquantino homered in the first inning, Witt Jr. hit his 13th home run of his season in the 4th inning and in the fifth Salvador Perez hit his 11th home run. It was an atypical three-homer game for the Royals, who remain the second-fewest hitters of the season.
On Tuesday in Game 2, Loftin homered to put the Royals up 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but ultimately it was a much closer game, with both the Pirates and Royals having only allowed four hits each in the game until the seventh inning.
The Pirates-Royals series is a series between teams that neither rank in the MLB's top 20 in any offensive category. The Pirates, for example, have the fewest home runs this season and the second-worst OPS in the league.
The third game of this series will be played Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
