The second qualifying round of the Champions League kicks off this week, and one of the most interesting looking ties sees Cypriot champions Pafos take on Israeli league winners Maccabi Tel Aviv. Pafos dominated domestically last season, finishing top of the league during the regular season and then easing to the title thanks to some rock-solid performances during the Championship Round.
Maccabi Tel Aviv had a slightly trickier path to the title. They finished second to Hapoel Be'er Sheva during the first phase of the season, before winning seven of their 10 Championship Round fixtures, to pip their rivals to the title by just two points. However, they come into Tuesday's game off the back of a disappointing Super Cup reverse to Hapoel Be'er Sheva. Despite playing against ten men for over 70 minutes, Tel Aviv failed to make their superiority count and fell to a deserved 2-1 defeat.
