Mexico's León will face CF Montreal in their first match of the 2025 Leagues Cup. This is a match between two teams that, in their last five competitive matches, have only won one; Montreal remains last in the MLS Eastern Conference, having conceded 46 goals in 25 matches. León failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last Clausura tournament and in the three Apertura matches they played before the long trip to Canada, they only scored three goals.
León will arrive at Saputo Stadium to play Montreal after being thrashed 4-1 in Mexico City by Cruz Azul. Not even León's star midfielder, James Rodríguez, could prevent Cruz Azul from depriving his team of possession; León only had 39% possession in that last defeat, although curiously, León had more big chances.
León has reason to believe it can have a strong Leagues Cup tournament, having won the inaugural tournament and never lost in the first round. Montreal also advanced to the group stage in the previous edition.
