CF Monterrey enters their final group-stage game in must-win territory as they face Charlotte FC on Thursday. After falling 3-2 to FC Cincinnati in their opener and then drawing 1-1 with the New York Red Bulls (winning the shootout for two points), Monterrey’s path to the knockout stage requires a full three points from this clash.
Despite inconsistent tournament results, Monterrey has looked sharper under new head coach Domènec Torrent, who took over earlier this year. Domestically, they reached the Apertura final last season and opened the new Liga MX campaign with two wins from their first three matches.
Charlotte FC, on the other hand, came into the Leagues Cup in strong MLS form, riding a four-match winning streak. However, tournament play has exposed their defensive frailties. They were overwhelmed 4-1 by FC Juárez in their opener and drew 2-2 with Chivas Guadalajara before falling in penalties.
With just one point from two games, Charlotte’s knockout hopes are slim, but they’ll still aim to close out the group stage on a high note in front of their home fans. A win, plus favorable results elsewhere, could see them sneak through.
