After a disappointing campaign in Monaco, Casper Ruud aims for a deeper run in Barcelona. However, he first needs to overcome a scrappy opponent in Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia in Tuesday’s first-round encounter.
Frustrations continue to build on Casper Ruud following another earlier-than-expected exit at the 2025 Monte Carlo Masters. Ruud had entered the hostilities in Monaco as one of the favorites to challenge Carlos Alcaraz for the title because of his lofty reputation as a clay-court expert and a two-time French Open finalist. However, disaster struck as early as the season round when Ruud got outgunned by Alexei Popyrin of Australia 6-4 3-6 7-5. The loss ended Ruud’s bid for a back-to-back final appearance in the first major tournament of the clay court season.
Meanwhile, Galan had to gut out two hard-earned victories to barge into the main draw at the Barcelona Open. The Colombian defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3 6-3 and Jacob Fearnley 7-5 6-4 to arrange his fifth head-to-head duel with Casper Ruud on Tuesday.

I am quite intrigued about Gallan’s ability to give Ruud a close battle in this first-round match. Gallan had lost all four previous head-to-head matchups with Ruud in straight sets. However, they haven’t played each other since 2021. Gallan is coming into the tournament with a bit momentum behind him after posting 20-9 record in the year. Ruud, on the other hand, limped into the clay-court season with a 13-5 record. His third-round loss to Alexei Popyrin in Monaco is considered by many as a punch in the gut because he’s widely expected to dominate lesser foes on the surface upon which he built the foundation of his career. I still believe Ruud is going to win, though I am not sure if his current form can dominate Gallan the way he did in their previous encounters.
